Dear Towerpoint,

The season of predictions is fully underway, and everyone has an opinion on what will be in store for 2019.

Google market outlook 2019, and hundreds of millions of results turn up, many containing links to forecasts from virtually every major financial institution in the world. Provocative titles such as "Be Prepared," "A Better Deal," and "Down But Not Out" tease our appetite for predictions, and feed our natural desire to hear, and want to believe, these predictions.

So-called financial pundits, speaking or writing with both confidence and conviction, use phrases (or threats) such as "slower growth" and "rising rates" and "more volatility," all of which dot the front pages of these 2019 market outlook reports. And behaviorally, as human beings, we cannot help but to be inspired by their conviction, because conviction breeds certainty, and certainty is something we are hard-wired to desire. However, if we believe we are smarter today than at any point in time in our evolution, then we can work to be objective and recognize:

  1. This language and these words are contextually meaningless for 98% of investors.
  2. Most of these predictions will end up being forgotten and incorrect.

The patently uncertain and unpredictable times in which we currently live lead to a ravenous hunger to know what the future holds, a hunger we cannot feed. However, the sooner we accept the reality that we do not, and cannot, know what lies ahead, the higher the probability of experiencing longer-term financial and personal success and peace of mind. We believe the ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu put it best:

Specific to managing your money and financial affairs, have a process, trust it, and be disciplined in adhering to it - regardless of the external financial, political, and market environment. Staying objective in how you make decisions is not always easy when fear and greed both wield great conscious and subconscious influence, but doing so is absolutely essential.

While accurately and consistently predicting the future is next to impossible, one forecast we feel confident in making is that the reporting of the 24/7 news cycle will continue unabated. The past two weeks were no exception:

Locally, Towerpoint Wealth's President, Joseph Eschleman, Partner - Wealth Advisor, Jonathan LaTurner, and Director of Research and Analytics, Nathan Billigmeier (along with Lori and Raquel in the middle), wrapped up their Movember fundraiser (and shaved off their mustaches) two weeks ago - Team 'Mo's & Towerpoint Bros' worked hard to raise $3,228 for men's testicular and prostate cancer!

What we know to be true: The world remains a very complicated place. We encourage you to call (916-405-9140), email (info@towerpointwealth.com), or Tweet (@twrpointwealth) with any concerns, questions, or needs you have. We continue to be here for you, and look forward to connecting with, helping, and being a direct and fully independent expert financial resource for each of you.

- Joseph, Jonathan, and the entire Towerpoint Wealth team
